ABOUT THE PROJECT

The purpose of the TXDOT Green Ribbon Program is to improve the visual character of highway corridors and minimize the negative impacts of air pollution through planting of trees and shrubs.

The City of Grapevine is constructing the third Green Ribbon project scheduled for completion in the summer 2018 and currently designing the fourth phase scheduled to begin construction fall of 2018.

Upon completion of the fourth project, over 350 trees will have been planted and approximately 3 miles of highway corridors leading into Grapevine will greatly enhance the appearance, specifically at Stone E. Meyer to the merging of State Highway 121 and State Highway 360.  Landscape enhancements include adaptive and native trees, shrubs and grasses in addition to drip irrigation and pavers within the medians. The landscape enhancements have been funded through the TXDOT Green Ribbon Program.  The City was awarded $500,000 by the Federal Highway Administration and TxDOT Green Ribbon program. This is a non-matching, reimbursable-grant program with varying fixed dollar amounts awarded to chosen projects. Construction is scheduled to begin early February 2020 and finish late summer.

The SH 26 Landscape Enhancement Project is located along SH 26, spanning from Texan Trail to the FM 2499 Overpass, covering a distance of 2.3 miles. This phase aims to enhance the entertainment district, which includes Gaylord, Great Wolf Lodge, and Grapevine Mills, while also strengthening Grapevine’s streetscape identity in this vital corridor. The enhancement will be achieved through the use of native or adaptive trees, flowering shrubs, and ornamental grasses. Additionally, planter pots will be strategically placed along the medians to further pique interest. A total of 242 new trees will be planted along the corridor, augmenting beneficial canopy coverage for Grapevine. The overall cost for this phase amounts to $1,900,000, with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) committing $700,000 in funding through the Green Ribbon Program. Supplementary funding of $250,000 will be provided through the Governor Community Achievement Award, and an additional $150,000 will be sourced from the City’s Tree Mitigation Fund. The project is projected to conclude by the end of this year.
